Villagers (mainly women) in the district used to walk more than 1 km every day to fetch water. They had to carry heavy buckets on their heads, and this work used to take up a lot of their time. In rural areas of Zimbabwe, only 67 per cent of people have safe drinking water, but COVID-19 has exacerbated the water shortage.
Oxfam has installed ten solar piped water systems and 15 laundry facilities in four districts in the country. The project has helped reduce distances women have to travel for clean water. They now have more time to develop their livelihoods and take care of their children.

Dropping out of school is common in Malawi, especially for girls in rural villages. Around a quarter of the country’s population lives in extreme poverty; many families marry off their daughters early in exchange for dowries which help them escape poverty.
Oxfam is working with local partners and the community to keep girls in school for a better future.
